Raw Material Characteristics & Harvesting Process
Chuanxiong plants grow 40-60 cm tall, with well-developed roots that form irregular nodular fist-shaped masses and emit a strong aroma. The stem is erect, terete, with longitudinal striations, much branched at the distal end, and the lower stem nodes are expanded into discoid shapes (called “Lingzi”). The lower leaves have petioles 3-10 cm long, with enlarged bases; the leaf blade is ovate-triangular in outline, 12-15 cm long and 10-15 cm wide, 3-4 times ternately pinnatisect, with 4-5 pairs of ovate-lanceolate pinnae (6-7 cm long, 5-6 cm wide), and the ultimate segments are linear-lanceolate to oblong-ovate (2-5 mm long, 1-2 mm wide) with mucronate tips; the distal leaves of the stem are acuminate. The inflorescences are umbels, terminal or lateral, with 3-6 linear racemes (0.5-2.5 cm long), 7-24 unequal rays (2-4 cm long, scabrous on the inner side), and 4-8 linear racelets (3-5 mm long, scabrous).
The harvesting of Chuanxiong rhizomes follows strict seasonal standards: for plain cultivars, the best harvesting time is 4-5 days after the Xiaoman (Grain Buds) solar term; for mountain cultivars, it is August-September. The harvesting process includes digging out the rhizomes, removing stems, leaves and sediment, washing thoroughly, drying in the sun or with heat, and then beating with a cage to remove fibrous roots, ensuring high-quality raw materials for extraction.
