Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf. is a perennial herbaceous vine of the genus Codonopsis in the family Eustoma. The root of Codonopsis pilosula (Franch. Nannf.) is conical, with gray-yellow surface and ring, the head of the root has raised stem scar and buds, which is known as “lion’s head”, and there are branches from the middle of the root; the rhizomes are smooth and more in number, and all of them are entangled together. Prefer mild and cool climate, cold-resistant suitable for cultivation in deep soil, well-drained, loose soil and humus-rich sandy loam, about the middle and end of October between the cold dew and frost, before the soil freezes and digging. Dangshen is sweet in flavor and flat in nature; it belongs to the spleen and lung meridians; it has the effects of strengthening the spleen and benefiting the lungs, nourishing the blood and generating fluids.

Function Of Codonopsis Extract

Codonopsis extract can inhibit the secretion of gastric acid, reduce the acidity of gastric juice, promote the secretion of mucus, enhance the gastric mucus-bicarbonate barrier, and increase the endogenous prostaglandins which have protective effect on gastric mucosa.

Codonopsis extract can enhance the number of macrophages, increase cell volume, intracellular nucleic acids. Sugars, ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase and other enzymes activity increased, thus enhancing its phagocytosis.

Codonopsis extract can increase the number of erythrocytes and affect the role of the spleen in promoting erythropoiesis. It makes the red blood cell count and hemoglobin content rise significantly.
